Ja es ist schon Herbst. Die Blätter der Bäume färben sich und fallen zu Boden, die Temperaturen sinken, und es wird schon sehr früh dunkel (und eher spät hell).

Für unseren Jahresendanlass finden wir uns im Radisson Blu Hotel am Flughafen Zürich ein. Es erwartet euch viele interessante Sessions quer durch (fast) alle Bereiche von VMware, für euch präsentiert durch die besten Speaker die wir organisieren konnten.

So richtig trauen wir dem Wetter noch nicht. Auch wenn wir schon rund einen Monat Frühling haben, es ist nach wie vor kalt und öfters mal bewölkt und nass. Nichtsdestotrotz haben wir uns zusammengesetzt und wieder einen neuen Event für euch zusammengestellt!

Dieses Mal geht es um VMware Tanzu. Ihr wisst was Container sind und was die mit Computing zu tun haben? Kubernetes sagt euch etwas? Und ihr wollt gerne mehr über diese Technologie erfahren? Dann dürfte unser Event in Mai genau das Richtige sein um euren IT-Rucksack mit noch etwas mehr Wissen zu füllen!

Falls ihr schon alles dazu wissen solltet, schadet es nicht wenn ihr dennoch am Event teilnehmt. Es gibt immer die Möglichkeit mit anderen Teilnehmern zu fachsimpeln, den Blickwinkel zu ändern, oder einfach auch etwas Networking am Ende es „offiziellen“ Teils beim Apéro.

We don’t really trust the weather yet. Even though we’ve had spring for about a month now, it’s still cold and often cloudy and wet. Nevertheless, we got together and put together another new event for you!

This time it’s about VMware Tanzu. Do you know what containers are and what they have to do with computing? Kubernetes tells you something? And would you like to learn more about this technology? Then our event in May should be just the right thing to fill your IT backpack with a little more knowledge!

If you should already know everything about it, it doesn’t hurt if you still take part in the event. There is always the opportunity to talk shop with other participants, to change your perspective, or simply to do some networking at the end of the „official“ part at the aperitif.

Wir sind im Herbst angelangt, und die grosse IT-Veranstaltung VMware Explore (ehemals VMworld) ging vor Kurzem in den USA über die Bühne. Im November können interessierte auch in Barcelona teilnehmen.

Diese Veranstaltung haben wir zum Anlass genommen um einen grossen Event unsererseits zu planen! Ziemlich genau zwischen den Events in den USA und Europa. Über die Speaker

Cormac Hogan ist seit 17 Jahren VMware-Veteran und derzeit Director und Chief Technologist im Büro des CTO in der Cloud Infrastructure Business Group (CIBG). Seine Interessen liegen hauptsächlich im Bereich Storage und Kubernetes. Er bloggt ausführlich unter https://cormachogan.com/ und ist außerdem Autor einer Reihe von Büchern über vSAN (das hyperkonvergierte Angebot von VMware) sowie eines kürzlich erschienenen Buches mit dem Titel „Kubernetes for vSphere Administrators“.

Johan van Amersfoort arbeitet als Technologe bei ITQ, wo er für die technische Strategie in den Bereichen Endbenutzer-Computing und künstliche Intelligenz verantwortlich ist. Er ist Autor der VDI Design Guide Book Series, Host mehrerer Tech-Podcasts (wie EUC Digest, Unexplored Territory und In de Aap Gelogeerd), vExpert und einer der 19 VMware Certified Design Experts (VCDXs) weltweit im Bereich Desktop und Mobilität. Er liebt es, über EUC, GPUs, KI-Sachen und CrossFit zu sprechen, besonders bei Veranstaltungen wie dieser!

About the Speakers

Cormac Hogan is a 17-year VMware veteran and is currently a Director and Chief Technologist in the Office of the CTO in the Cloud Infrastructure Business Group (CIBG). His interests are mostly around storage and Kubernetes. He blogs extensively at https://cormachogan.com/, and is also the author of a number of books on vSAN (VMware’s hyperconverged offering) as well as a recent book entitled “Kubernetes for vSphere Administrators”.

Johan van Amersfoort works as a Technologist at ITQ, where he is responsible for the technical strategy within the End-User Computing and Artificial Intelligence areas. He is the author of the VDI Design Guide Book Series, host of multiple tech podcasts (like EUC Digest, Unexplored Territory, and In de Aap Gelogeerd), a vExpert, and one of the 19 VMware Certified Design Experts (VCDXs) globally in the Desktop and Mobility area. Swiss German VMUG Year Opening – vBeer Event

Im Jahr 2021 konnten wir einige Events durchführen. Mit einem Feuerwerk sind wir im Februar gestartet. Im März konnten wir ein langjähriges Mitglied und Macher hinter den Kulissen als weiteren Leader verpflichten. VMware und Google haben uns im April mehr über die Multi-Cloud Umgebung gezeigt. Mit unseren Kollegen aus Österreich und Deutschland konnten wir im Mai letzten Jahres eine virtuelle UserCon auf die Beine stellen. Noch vor der Sommerpause im Juni hat uns Pure in ihre Welt des Storage schauen lassen. VMware hat uns im Oktober in die Welt der Cybersecurity eintauchen lassen, und mit Intel und der Optane Technologie haben wir im November quasi den Jahresabschluss gefeiert.

Was für ein Jahr! Doch jetzt gehts weiter!

Wir im Leaderteam planen schon seit geraumer Zeit was wir im Jahr 2022 so alles organisieren können. Viele Ideen wurden gepflanzt, doch haben sie nie das Licht der Welt erblickt da uns bis Februar die Corona-Situation immer wieder einen dicken Strich durch die Rechnung gezogen hat. Doch die Massnahmen sind nun (zumindest in der Schweiz) aufgehoben, und wir dürfen uns endlich wieder persönlich sehen!

Wir haben dies zum Anlass genommen und mit einem ganz einfachen und nicht-technischen Anlass zu starten. Ja, es gibt keine Tech-Sessions, keine Deep Dives, kein Zoom / WebEx / Teams. Wir treffen uns in der physischen Welt.

Wir hoffen das ihr es euch einrichten könnt, und freuen uns euch an diesem Anlass zu sehen. Wenn es zeitlich nicht ganz aufgeht, kein Problem. Ihr dürft auch gerne etwas später zu uns stossen. Wir bleiben eine Weile (also schon nicht open End, aber wir wollen es gemütlich haben).

We’re back! Yes, it was a long time, and we are really sorry about this! But we’re back now, and we will start the year with an awesome VMUG meeting!

Today we proudly announce our first VMUG meeting for this year! And we’re starting with a bombshell! In January this year, we were contacted by our friends from the Swiss-French VMUG. They told us that they are in contact with a VMware specialist to have him on their next VMUG meeting. And thanks to our friends we’re happy to welcome Cormac Hogan from VMware as our special guest for our first VMUG meeting this year!

Also a long-time supporter of our VMUG, a good friend, and a community guru, we also welcome Dennis Zimmer to our first VMUG meeting this year!

About our guests

Cormac Hogan is currently working as a Chief Technologist in the Office of the CTO in the Hyper-converged Infrastructure (HCI) Business Unit at VMware. Specialized in Software-Defined Storage, hyper-converged infrastructure. Co-author of the „Essential Virtual SAN“ and „vSAN 6.7 U1 Deep Dive“ books. Main author and owner of the blog cormachogan.com.

Dennis Zimmer has a strong reputation as a technology visionary across the globe. He has written 10 books, hundreds of magazine articles and video training, that are read and used by leading IT professionals. He has been awarded VMware vExpert for 11 years in a row and is a thought leader within the Virtualization Community. CEO of Opvizor.

About the event

Cormac Hogan will present us with the latest bits about vSAN, VMware Cloud Formation, Kubernetes Storage Constructs, Cloud Native Storage, and we might get a little sneak peek into the future. Dennis Zimmer will tell us more about Kubernetes on VMware in Detail.

Swiss German VMUG September Event – Performance Monitoring

The September event is all about Performance Monitoring with real-world problems and solutions. We’re hosted at „The Alehouse“ in Zurich, close to the University of Zurich. Our member Tom Luessi, Truecore GmbH, and Dennis Zimmer from Opvizor will show you interesting things about Performance Monitoring.

About the speakers

Dennis Zimmer is working since 20 years in the server virtualization area. He wrote several books, hundreds of magazine articles and video trainings. Dennis is also a 10-time VMware vExpert and is a thought leader within the Virtualization Community. Dennis is the CEO and board member of Opvizor Inc.

Tom Luessi is is working more than 15 years in IT in training, systems engineering and consulting, and is the CEO of Truecore GmbH. Tom is also working as CTO at the Swiss cloud provider Naveum AG. Since 2011 Tom is working as an IT-trainer and speaker at many specialist congresses, events and educational institutes. He is also a VMware vExpert.

About the topic

Tom gives us an insight into the customer’s requirements for performance and SLA monitoring, from the point of view of the Swiss cloud provider Naveum AG, using the example of the VMware vCloud Director based Infrastructure as a Service platform. Swiss German VMUG June Event – Backup, Restore and Availability

The June event is all about backup and availability of a vSphere infrastructure. We’re invited at the Veeam HQ and the guys there will show us some bits and bytes on how to backup and recovery and keeping your infrastructure available, in all scales.

We’ll meet at 5:30pm for the welcome, then from 6:00pm we’ll start with the event. After the event you’re invited to stay some minutes for some drinks and snacks and some chat.

Topics

We will hear lots about availability in virtualized infrastructure. Probably we’ll get also a sneak peak of upcoming updates and features within the Veeam software.

Location / travel

At this event we’re hosted directly at the Veeam Switzerland HQ in Baar. The office itself is located close to the Baar train station. If you travel with public transportation, you can travel on from Zurich main station with the InterRegio train towards Lucerne, or the S24 towards Rotkreuz. If you’re traveling from Zug you can pick the S1 and hop out at the station Baar Lindenplatz.

There are also limited parking lots available if you travel by car. The parking lots are charged, but not that expensive.

Information for parking / public transportation

There are about 200 paid parking lots directly at the venue. For restaurant visitors the parking lots a free of charge. Please follow the signs.

The airport hotel is located in the immediate vicinity of the train station Balsberg and also the train station of Glattbrugg can be reached on foot within a few minutes. Trains to the hotel run at regular intervals. Take the train to Zurich main station and then take the train to Zurich airport (IR, IC, S2 or S16). The airport shuttle runs every 15 to 30 minutes between the hotel and the airport and can be found in the arrivals area between Terminal 1 and 2.
